Children's Creative Workshop

We use the garden to create and share stories and poetry. The children have collaborated with adults to create a publication about their neighborhood experiences. Workshops have been sponsored by ROSAS, Park Slope Civic Council and Trust for Public Land.

At least twenty children meet in the garden twice weekly for eight weeks during the summer to explore personal, community and environmental issues through art and writing projects. The program is designed for children age five and over and for teens. The content of the workshops will be flexible, allowing for the creative input of the children and of garden members and other guest artists who bring their talents to the program. One theme that remains constant is the cycle of life and our presence in that cycle. Activities and objects from the garden are sometimes incorporated into the workshops. Past activities include writing and illustrating poetry and stories, drawing, painting, singing and other music-making, group art projects, art games, mask making, papier mache and other craft projects. On September 13th there will be a Back to School celebration for which the children will work on a theme project. There will be a book assembled to document the children’s work and to share it with the garden community. Photographs documenting the series will be displayed at the Harvest Festival, along with an exhibition of the children’s artworks. (Workshop leader is also responsible for creating curriculum, monitoring children’s progress, finding a workshop assistant and overseeing the creation of the project art book, see enclosed)
